8 Easy Ways to Eliminate Holiday Stress

Posted by on Dec 15, 2014

Let’s face it, women have it worse than men when it comes to holiday preparations. There’s Halloween, then Thanksgiving and somewhere after cleaning up after that we’ve got to find time to shop for gifts! It’s no wonder so many of us dread this time of year. Guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way. Follow our ten easy tips to take the “tense” out of your tinsel this year. 1 – Create the holiday experience YOU want Is it all about the gift giving for you? Is it about time with family and friends you don’t see often? What do YOU want your holiday to be like? Once you know that, you can work toward creating that experience. You don’t have to buy into the retail holiday rush or other people’s ideas of what this time of year should be like. It’s all up to you. 2 – Realize that your time is valuable and you don’t have to commit to everything Yes, it’s ok to say “NO” to entertaining people you don’t want to or taking on projects that you either don’t have time for or won’t enjoy. This one simple act of taking less off your plate will do wonders for your stress load. 3 – Realize that your time is valuable (see a trend here?) and you don’t HAVE to do it all – delegate! There are some things only you can do and there are some things that you can delegate to your spouse, kids or other people. One of the luxuries of living down south is, when a dinner guest comes through the door with their casserole contribution, the first words out of their mouth are “Can I do anything to help?”  They aren’t patronizing you! They see the hard work you’ve put into cleaning, decorating and getting everything ready for them to have a great holiday feast. You’re running around like a chicken with your head cut off and this person genuinely wants to contribute. So, let them! Tell them to carve the turkey, set the table or anything else you need done. You’ll have less stress and they’ll feel more like a guest and less like a burden. 4- Come to terms with the fact that unless you’re Martha Stewart or Paula Deen, you aren’t Martha Stewart or Paula Deen Food is gonna have issues. The house isn’t going to be perfect. You don’t have a personal staff or tv crew cleaning up,  prepping everything and making sure your setup is prime for viewing. It’s ok, your guests don’t have an entourage either.  Let it go and enjoy your holiday. 5- Leave the Hatfields & McCoys at home. Every family has strife, disagreements and conflicting personalities that just don’t get along.  It doesn’t have to ruin the holidays or add stress to your life. The bottom line is, you can’t control other people but you can control how you react to them. Here’s some tips on how to do that in a constructive way that’ll make you feel better. 6-Take time for yourself Get a pedicure, a manicure, a massage, read a book, dance to some music — whatever makes you feel fabulous, take the time to DO IT!  You are the pilot of this holiday plane, sister, and if you go down, everyone goes down! Preserve your own sanity by setting aside an hour a week (at least!) to do something you enjoy. Take mini breaks when you’re really feeling stressed. Here are some simple ideas. For even more relaxation, check out this website, especially the EFT technique. It seems weird at first but the results are amazing! 7-Laugh...
